Canton Ticino (Switzerland) is the only important area outside Italy in which Italian is the official language. However, the Italian language of Canton Ticino is also influenced by other linguistic systems present in the Swiss Confederation and by the Ticino dialect. The semantic differential results show a much more homogeneous outcome than appears through the results of the questionnaire. Italian Switzerland ‘is a necessarily hybrid and ambiguous situation’ even if it is settling into a position in which the official language is also the language of national identification and the dialect is the language of affectivity and informality.

Abstract
Canton Ticino (Switzerland) is the only important area outside Italy in which Italian is the official language. However, the Italian language of Canton Ticino is also influenced by other linguistic systems present in the Swiss Confederation and by the Ticino dialect. The semantic differential results show a much more homogeneous outcome than appears through the results of the questionnaire. Italian Switzerland ‘is a necessarily hybrid and ambiguous situation’ even if it is settling into a position in which the official language is also the language of national identification and the dialect is the language of affectivity and informality.Pubblicazioni consigliate
