The response of a unity-feedback system with a delay element in the forward path exhibits a periodic component that can be approximated by truncating its harmonic expansion. Rational approximants of the transfer function e −Ts of such element can simply be obtained from this closed-loop approximation. A unifying approach to recent methods based on this criterion [2],[3] is presented,whic h allows us to point out their respective features. The standard Pad´e technique and a heuristic method described in [5] are also considered.
