In Italy, the goal of the development of a paediatric palliative care network is to spare children with life-limiting and lifethreatening disease lengthy hospital stays. Our aim was to estimate the number of children eligible for specialist palliative care at home in the Veneto region, Italy. We used hospital discharge records (HDRs) and a selection of codes from the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) relating to lifelimiting and life-threatening diseases. Our method can be used to estimate the number of children who need palliative care and also to monitor how this changes with time and in different geographical areas. But it does not shed light on the type of care needed.
