The book encompasses both philosophical and neurospychological aspects of meditation, focusing on methods and purposes of this introspective techniques, as well as its outcomes on brain activity and mind. Then the same analysis is conducted on hypnosis, discussing its history, phenomenology, misinterpretations and prejudices sorrounding it and leading to its a priori refusal. Finally, the book discusses in details all areas where hypnosis and meditations superimpose, including both procedures of induction and activated brain areas: these data allow to conclude that they are like two sides of the same coin with strong still underestimated similarities. The last chapter thoroughly discusses the profound epistemological implications of the misinterpretations of hypnosis and other subjective phenomena, such as the so-called altered states of consciousness.
