GIROLAMO FRESCOBALDI, Liber secundus diversarum modulationum singulis, binis, ternis, quaternisque vocibus (1627), edizione critica e ricostruzione della parte mancante di Marco Della Sciucca e Marina Toffetti

Nell’ambito dell’opera di Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643) il Liber secundus diversarum modulationum singulis, binis, ternis, quaternisque vocibus pubblicato a Roma nel 1627 riveste un interesse particolare per più di un motivo. Innanzitutto ci è pervenuto attraverso un solo esemplare, pubblicato in libri-parte e mancante del Cantus secundus, in secondo luogo costituisce un raro esempio di musica vocale - e in particolare sacra - di Frescobaldi dato alle stampe in un periodo particolarmente fecondo della sua attività compositiva. L’edizione coincide con il 26° volume della collana dei Monumenti Musicali Italiani realizzata dalle edizioni Suvini Zerboni in collaborazione con la Società Italiana di Musicologia ed è stata curata da Marco Della Sciucca e Marina Toffetti che, dopo aver delineato il contesto in cui i mottetti sono stati creati e averne minuziosamente descritto le caratteristiche stilistiche, illustrano tutte le problematiche inerenti l’apparato critico dettagliando i criteri di trascrizione ed edizione adottati anche nella ricostruzione della parte mancante. Il volume pertanto restituisce per la prima volta al contesto vivo della fruizione anche le composizioni giunte incomplete e offre un contributo significativo alla riscoperta e alla valorizzazione di pagine sinora ingiustamente trascurate. Within the context of the compositions of Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643) the Liber secundus diversarum modulationum Singulis, Binis, Ternis, Quaternisque vocibus published in Rome in 1627 is of particular interest for several reasons. Firstly, it came down to us through a single copy, published in part-books and lacking the Cantus secundus; secondly it represents a rare example of Frescobaldi's vocal - and in particular sacred - music printed in a particularly fertile period of his activity as a composer. This edition is the 26th volume in the series Monumenti Musicali Italiani published by Suvini Zerboni in collaboration with the Società Italiana di Musicologia. It is edited by Marco Della Sciucca and Marina Toffetti who first outline the context in which the motets were created and then describe in detail their stylistic characteristics. The editors then illustrate all the difficulties inherent in the apparatus criticus, explaining the criteria adopted for the transcription and edition as well as those used for the reconstruction of the missing part. The volume therefore, for the first time, makes available for study and performance also compositions that have survived incomplete and in doing so offers a significant contribution to the rediscovery and furtherance of works till now unduly neglected.
