SAM (SAfe Airway MAnagement)is a new device for airway management, able to overcome the limits of all other available tools. Essentially, SAM is a double lumen tube with a new structure and bending radius, which may be realized as a disposable (e.g., PVC) or non disposable (e.g., silicone) device, according to its use (emergency or anaesthesia). Once SAM is inserted into the oropharynx, the airway distal vent is located in front of the larynx, allowing for blind intubation and insertion of catheters into the trachea through its lumen. The internal diameter of airway and oesophageal lumens are 13 mm and 8.5 mm, respectively, allowing for blind intubation, gastric drainage, bronchoscopy and gastroscopy without interference with assisted ventilation. The two cuffs (pharyngeal and oesophageal) allow for separation of airway and gastric compartments. Its insertion in mannequins is very easy and fast, requiring only 13 sec (as an average) from the start of insertion to effective venti...
