The purpose of this piece of work is twofold: on the one hand, it aims at offering a brief framework of the main economic literature that, in the last three decades, has investigated the impact of skills on professional athletes’ pay and performance. On the other hand, it aims at summarizing both the common features and the main issues or open questions that characterize the application of the earnings function approach of human capital theory to the sector of the most popular professional sports in US and Europe.
