In the international literature several publications can be found that deal with the physical properties od fuels, air and combustion gases. Generally, however, the data are not complete in a single text, but must be collected from a number of different publications. For this reason we decided to edit a new book, which can be consedered as a handbook or a vademecum containing a relatively complete collection of formulas, diagrams and tables, with the aim of supplying useful information about the properties of dry and moist air, fuels and flue gases. The book is useful for engineering students, researchers, professionals, plant operators and managers who are interested in quickly finding the data that will enable them to determine the mass and energy balances of the combustion processes taking place in furnaces, boilers and combustion chambers, supplied by whatever fuel. All the commonly used solid. liquid and gaseous fossil fuels and their main components are consedered. In some cases, their average characteristics depend on the region of their origin: and this feature has been taken into account. Moreover, biofuels, such as biodiesel and ethanol, have been included in the text, because of their increasing interest and use in burners and internal combustion engines. The book is a result of a collaboration between the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Padova, Italy, and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. The authors hope that this collaboration will continue for many years to come.
